I went into A Little Buzzed by Alys Murray not really knowing what to expect—and honestly, that made it even more fun. This one definitely leans into the rom-com chaos, but it also had a surprising amount of heart that caught me off guard.
At first glance, the premise is playful and a little over-the-top (a sex toy engineer determined to fix her “problem” ASAP), but what I ended up loving most is that the story isn’t really about experience (or lack of it) or even just the romance. At its core, it’s about self-sabotage and how easy it is to make yourself smaller because it feels safer than risking getting hurt.
Watching Scout slowly come to terms with the fact that she’s been the one holding herself back felt more intimate than any of the steamy moments. And Hudson? He was such a standout for me—patient, kind, and still willing to show up for her even when things weren’t easy.
I listened to this one on audio, and I honestly think that added to the experience. There were definitely a few scenes that had me blushing, but also multiple times where I just sat in my car longer because I couldn’t stop listening.
This one definitely isn’t for the faint of heart (the spice level is high) but it still manages to balance those moments with a lot of emotional depth.
By the end, this book really stuck with me. It’s messy, funny, chaotic, and somehow still incredibly tender. It leaves you with that reminder that it’s okay to want what you want—and to be who you are—even if it takes someone else helping you see it first.
I closed this one feeling way more emotional than I expected, and I kind of loved that.
