There are combat novels, resistance novels, prisoner-of-war novels, and home-front novels. Some books were written right after the war by people still reeling from it, and others came out seventy years later, written by people whose parents or grandparents never explained what they’d lived through. The form keeps evolving because each generation approaches the subject from a different place. Some writers lived through it, some survived it, and some grew up in its aftermath without ever hearing the full story. My own reading in this area came through a side door: my father, Vietnam, and the longer project of understanding what war does to a person and what that person carries into ordinary life afterward. The best of these novels keep coming back to the same questions: What does war really cost, who pays for it, and how long does that debt remain unpaid?
