Can love blossom between a woman haunted by her family’s past and a man haunted by the trauma of war?
Cora Scott is determined to hold onto her family’s Texas ranch and provide a stable home for her young half-brother, Charlie, despite the mounting challenges of post-Civil War frontier life. But when a scheming creditor threatens to seize their land, she must accept help from Ben McKenzie, a former Yankee soldier sent by her late brother. Though Ben’s generosity and strength draw her, the man’s private struggle she stumbles upon—too reminiscent of her father’s alcoholism—makes her question whether she can trust her heart to him.
Ben McKenzie arrives in Texas intent on fulfilling his promise to his dying friend to protect Cora and Charlie. While using his inheritance to save their ranch, he battles not only the loss of their cattle but also his dependency on laudanum—a medicine that turned into a curse after his imprisonment at Andersonville. As his feelings for Cora deepen, he must choose between his promise to his father to take over their Philadelphia newspaper and his growing dream of a life with Cora in Texas.
When a Comanche warrior begins courting Cora and Ben’s responsibilities in Philadelphia threaten to tear them apart, they must decide if their love is strong enough to overcome their fears and forge a future together on the Texas frontier.

My favorite time period to write about is the 1850’s to the 1870’s, and I love writing about the
Civil War/Reconstruction-era and/or the Texas Frontier.
The first book I wrote was inspired by my visit to an 18 th century home in the Shenandoah Valley
of Virginia. The stone house stood within a couple miles of Cedar Creek, a major Civil War
battlefield. The owner explained that a brother and sister lived there during the war, and he
pointed out a bullet hole in the wall. That nugget inspired my love for Civil War history and a
150,000 word historic romance (which I eventually plan to trim down and publish). I have
shelves of Civil War research books. My favorites are diaries, letters, and journals from the era.
In grad school, I wrote my dissertation on the effects that the war had on marriage and courtship.
The war ripped the land, families, and hearts apart. I wanted to create stories of love that couldn’t
be quenched by any battlefield.
No matter the time period or the setting, I love romance.
In my first published novel, I combined romance, the war, and a new love, the Texas frontier.
Texas Forsaken was inspired by a true life 19 th century-captive story that had haunted my heart
for over twenty years. I took the moment of crisis from that story and wove a different trajectory
with a character of my own creation, Eyes-Like-Sky, who comes to love a man who was once
her enemy.
As I wrote the story, I was captivated by the Texas frontier, the wide open spaces, the horizons
that seem to stretch on forever, and the canyons. And my heat went out to those who had fought
for the land.
My husband and I traveled to West Texas for me to research the novel. We stayed in a CCC cabin
at the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon, the second largest canyon in the U.S. For several days, we
immersed ourselves in the beauty of the red sandstone, shale, and gypsum that looked like
colorful Spanish skirts. The history and place called for me to write more books set on the
frontier. I’m still using notes and photos from the museums and forts we visited.
Both the Civil War and the Western frontier are rife with hardship, danger, risk, and conflict.
They act as crucibles, refining perseverance, courage, and for some, faith. In the midst of all of
that, I love to throw a hero and heroine together who have every reason not trust each other and
watch them fall in love. That’s my kind of story.
