About the Author

Brett Armstrong has been exploring other worlds as a writer since age nine. Years later, he still writes, but now invites others along on his excursions. He’s shown readers haunting, deep historical fiction (Destitutio Quod Remissio), scary-real dystopian sci-fi (Tomorrow’s Edge series), and layered, sweeping epic fantasy (Quest of Fire). Every story is a journey of discovery and an attempt to be a brush in the Master Artist’s hand. Through dark, despair, light, joy, and everything in between, the end is always meant to leave his fellow literary explorers with wonder and hope. Always busy with a new story, he also enjoys drawing, gardening, and spending time with his wife and son.

Guest Post: The Christian story interwoven into the fantasy – What comes first?
For Quest of Fire as a whole, the spiritual components of the story became part of the core fabric of the story pretty early on. It’s not pure allegory like The Pilgrim’s Progress, but it is more directly symbolic in how it represents certain things than say The Lord of the Rings, even if it reads much like that series. For instance, the protagonists joined an ancient order of knights who serve the rightful ruler of the Lowlands (Quest of Fire’s story world), the High King. And he grants Knights armor and a sword emblematic of the spiritual armor of Ephesians 6. Take for instance the spiritsword, analogous to the Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17). The spiritsword, when wielded by a knight in service to the High King will begin to catch fire on the blade, especially over the lettering engraved into it—divine words from the High King himself. Then the source of the burning blades and Quest of Fire series title is derived from the book of Hebrews where God is described as a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29). Not all of the Scriptural influences and allusions are so direct, usually being tied to the organic flow of the story’s events. Situations, many of which with strong corollaries to what anyone would face in life, arise and how the characters handle them—both poorly and rightly—reflect the deeper truth found in Scripture and I pray points people to the Truth (John 14:6). I read about some research a university conducted some years ago that explained the way the brain processes stories is the same as it does lived experiences. To an extent, that means that the stories we read becomes part of who we are as much as what we experience in life. Respecting that sobering consideration, I write stories with the prayer that the story is an enjoyable escape, but more than that, when the reader is done with the book, I want what they’ve faced in the story to help better prepare them to face the trials and situations of the real world. So, the spiritual dimension and substance of The Unending Light is woven into the very fabric as the story.
