In the land of mystery news today, we’ve got adaptation news as always, new paperback releases to pick up, an author chat about her favorite vengeful housewife books, and an actress discussing a social thriller that should get the adaptation treatment.
For paperback readers
If you wait for the paperback release to finally get to a book you’ve been dying to read—or keep hearing about— here’s a Goodreads roundup of 66 new releases that includes a bunch of great mysteries, thrillers, and true crime. Two of my faves are Elon Green’s The Man Nobody Killed and S.A. Cosby’s King of Ashes.
Krysten Ritter to star in adaptation of her own novel
Actress Krysten Ritter has published two thrillers, Bonfire and Retreat, with the latter currently in the news for an adaptation. Ritter is teaming up with Steve Yockey, writer-producer of The Flight Attendant and Dead Boy Detectives, with the goal of starring in a series adaptation. Deadline has all the details.

Hard agree
Actress Iantha Richardson is currently playing Special Agent Faith Mitchell on the ABC series Will Trent, adapted from Karen Slaughter’s Will Trent series. As a fellow book lover, she stated that Alyssa Cole’s When No One is Watching should get the adaptation treatment during a chat with People magazine. She’s 100% correct; the novel is, as I said in my 2000 review, “Suspense at its best. And hopefully the start to the next massive boom in crime novels being social thrillers.” If you’ve yet to pick it up, definitely go in knowing as little as possible. And Hollywood: you can stop leaving money on the table at any time.
More Alex Cross
James Patterson’s Alex Cross series, which began with Along Came a Spider, got adapted in 2024 by Amazon Prime Video, with Aldis Hodge as detective Alex Cross. If you’re already a fan of the series, Cross, you’ll be thrilled to know there is a season 3 in the works; if you’ve yet to check out the show, you have the peace of mind of knowing you have a few seasons to watch. If you’re wondering about the show’s popularity, Variety reports, “The series ranked as the third most watched premiere on the service in 2025, and it reached No. 1 on the streamer in more than 100 countries.”
When housewives get revenge
Elizabeth Arnott, author of the new thriller The Secret Lives of Murderers’ Wives, did a fun roundup at The New York Times recommending books about housewives looking for some revenge. Among her picks are a Book Riot favorite, The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff.
